What Can You Do About Peeling Paint

What Can You Do About Peeling Paint

Giving your room a brand-new coat of paint is an excellent way to improve its appearance. However, nothing is more frustrating than seeing that your newly painted walls are beginning to peel and flake away. This problem is especially common in bathrooms. Your friends at My Painter have seen this problem again and again. That is why we want to help you understand why it happens so that you can avoid it in the future.

Why It Happens

The first step in avoiding this problem is to understand why it happens. Many times, peeling paint occurs due to impatience, such as not priming or cleaning the surface beforehand. Not allowing the paint to completely dry between coats or purchasing low-quality paint can also cause these problems. A room with a lot of humidity can also cause the paint to flake and peel away.

How to Fix This Problem

Many times, you can easily patch the problem instead of repainting the entire room if you catch the problem early on. You will need to wear safety goggles and a mask to avoid paint chips from flying into your eyes, mouth, or nose.

To begin, you will need to protect your flooring and trim with protective coverings. You will also need to use a putty knife to scrape away all the peeling paint.

Afterward, you can apply a thin layer of patching compound and let it dry overnight.

The next day you can sand the puttied areas until everything is smooth and flush with the wall. You will then need to clean all the dust and debris by using a damp cloth and to allow it to completely dry.

You can apply a primer once everything is dry, as this plays an important role in preventing your paint from flaking or chipping away.

Finish up by painting the patched areas, starting in the center of the patch, and painting out near the edges. It is also a good idea to avoid taking a shower or bath for the next 24 hours if you are painting in the bathroom.
