All About Paint Sheens

Our My Denver Painter team is happy to get started on your project! But before we begin, it is important to know what colors you want and what sheens you want them in. If you are not familiar with different paint sheens, what look they each achieve, and what areas they are most often used in, allow us to clear some of things up here in this article. That way, you can choose the best finish to fit your needs and desires.

Flat/Matte Finish

First off, let’s talk about flat or matte sheens. Flat or matte finishes have no shine and appear velvety or non-reflective. This finish is ideal for ceilings and walls in low-traffic areas, as it can hide imperfections and provides a smooth, elegant look. However, it may be less washable and more susceptible to stains compared to glossier finishes.

Eggshell Finish

Eggshell finishes have a slight sheen, resembling the surface of an eggshell. They are more lustrous than flat finishes but less shiny than satin or semi-gloss. Eggshell is versatile and often used for interior walls in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. It offers a balanced blend of durability and aesthetics while still hiding minor imperfections.

Satin Finish

Satin finishes have a soft, velvety sheen that is more reflective than eggshell but less than semi-gloss. Satin is suitable for high-traffic areas like family rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, as it is easier to clean and more resistant to stains compared to flat or eggshell finishes. It can also be used on woodwork and trim.

Semi-Gloss Finish

Semi-gloss finishes have a noticeable shine and reflect light, creating a sleek, polished appearance. Semi-gloss is commonly used for doors, cabinets, trim, and other woodwork, as well as in kitchens and bathrooms. It is easy to clean and highly durable, making it suitable for areas prone to moisture and frequent cleaning.

Gloss Finish

Gloss finishes are highly reflective and have a glossy, mirror-like shine. Gloss is typically reserved for specific applications, such as on furniture, accent pieces, or architectural details. It is not commonly used on walls or ceilings due to its high reflectivity, which can highlight imperfections.

High Gloss Finish

High gloss finishes are the shiniest and most reflective of all paint sheens. High gloss is mainly used on surfaces that require extreme durability and a polished look, such as trim, doors, and metal surfaces. It is less forgiving of imperfections and is generally not used on large wall surfaces.

Ultimately, the choice of paint sheen depends on your personal preferences, the specific requirements of the project, and the aesthetics you want to achieve in your space. Of course, if you need help deciding, we would love to lend our expert advice. No matter what, we will make sure that you get the look you want and results that are long lasting.
