How to Create a Venetian Plaster Accent Wall

Venetian plaster is one of the most popular ways to add texture and character to a room. Venetian plaster is made by applying layers of plaster over a textured base coat, and then burnishing it down to create a stone like finish. First, you should make sure your wall surface is smooth and free of cracks. If the wall has any imperfections, you will need to repair those before applying Venetian plaster. The base coat also needs to be applied as smoothly as possible so that it does not take away from the final result.

We recommend applying a base coat, which is made up of drywall mud and sand. The reason we use this mixture instead of just regular drywall compound or joint compound is that it dries harder than most other options. This will make the texture more durable and long-lasting for your project.

Once you have applied the first layer of textured paint, you will need to wait for it to dry completely. This can take anywhere from 24-48 hours, depending on humidity levels and the thickness of your base coat.
